Hey friends! I am sure as fans of Married With Children tv show you must be well aware of the controversy involving one of the episodes named Her Cups Runneth Over, which had been aired in the third season of the series. Well if some of you are not aware, then let me tell you about it. Actually it all started in 1989, when a housewife from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, named Terry Rakolta, found some of the scenes that were shown in the sixth episode of the third season, to be objectionable. The lady felt offended by the images of an old man wearing a garter and stockings, the scene where Steve touches the panties of a mannequin dressed in S&M gear, a homosexual man wearing a tiara on his head and a woman who takes off her bra in front of Al.

So Rakolta started a protest campaign under which she wrote letters to the advertisers of the show, demanding that they boycott the show. She also made several appearances on television talk shows, which ultimately forced the advertisers to drop their support for the show. To get over this controversy, the executives at Fox decided not to telecast the next episode that was titled I’ll See You in Court which was however not removed from the third season package of the first DVD release. Married With Children episode was later referred to as The Lost Episode and was ultimately aired on FX Network on 18th June 2002

I feel the whole hue and cry raised against the series during the protest actually served to popularize the series. It was due to the Rakolta’s intense protests to get the show cancelled that the audience got more interested in watching the show and as a result the ratings rose to a level that enabled the series to remain on air for next seven years.

It is sometimes said that this was a ploy of the network to increase the interest as well as the curiosity of the audiences towards the series, but nothing has been proved. But whatever be the truth, the fact remains that Rakolta unintentionally proved to be beneficial for the series and its success.
